Il s’agit de la quatrième confrontation entre les deux équipes en Coupe du Monde, la deuxième en quarts de finale. À États-Unis 1994, sur la route de son quatrième sacre mondial, la Seleçao avait battu une équipe néerlandaise qui comptait dans ses rangs des stars du calibre de Dennis Bergkamp, Ronald Koeman et les jumeaux De Boer. Quatre ans plus tard, à France 1998, elle avait de nouveau eu raison des Oranjes, en demi-finales cette fois.
Bien que privés de leur défenseur central Joris Mathijsen, forfait sur blessure, les Pays-Bas vont aligner une cinquième victoire consécutive dans cette édition 2010. Après leurs succès en phase de groupes face au Danemark, au Japon et au Cameroun, ils ont dominé la Slovaquie en huitièmes. Comme quatre ans plus tôt en Allemagne, le Brésil verra donc sa campagne mondialiste prendre fin en quarts de finale.
⚔️ Les clés du match
Le public du Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium de Port Elizabeth ne doit pas attendre longtemps avant d’assister à l’ouverture du score brésilienne. Alors que l’on ne joue que depuis neuf minutes, Felipe Melo transperce la défense néerlandaise d’une ouverture luumineuse à l’attention de Robinho, qui trompe Maarten Stekelenburg. À ce stade, la Seleção semble partie pour dominer les débats.
Sans une série d’interventions exceptionnelles de Stekelenburg, les Néerlandais auraient très bien pu regagner le vestiaire avec un passif plus lourd. La tendance va s’inverser. Huit minutes après la reprise, Sneijder égalise d’un centre-tir qui effleure la tête de Felipe Melo avant de terminer sa course au fond des filets.
Un quart d’heure plus tard, Sneijder poursuit son récital en doublant la mise. Robben brosse un corner rentrant prolongé au premier poteau par Dirk Kuyt, qui permet au numéro 10 de battre Julio Cesar de la tête à bout portant. Dans la foulée, le Brésil subit un nouveau coup dur avec l’expulsion de Felipe Melo, coupable de s’être essuyé les crampons sur la cuisse de Robben.

Après avoir mis quatre matches et 355 minutes pour inscrire deux buts en Afrique du Sud, Wesley Sneijder a doublé son compteur en l’espace d’un quart d’heure contre le Brésil. Ce doublé face aux quintuples champions du monde a beaucoup compté pour le milieu de terrain intériste : “Il m’a suffi de mettre la tête. Ç’a été une super sensation de marquer”, a-t-il déclaré au sujet de son but à la 68e minute.
